His Excellency Arthur G.B. Thomas, Non-Resident Ambassador to the Czech Republic recently presented credentials to His Excellency Milos Zeman, President of the Czech Republic.Ambassador Thomas expressed his gratitude in being given the opportunity to serve the interest of Antigua and Barbuda to the Czech Republic and extended special greetings from the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, the Honourable Gaston A. Browne. In turn, President Zeman welcomed Ambassador Thomas warmly and expressed keen interest in bolstering cooperation between Antigua and Barbuda and the Czech Republic.
During his visit Ambassador Thomas also met with the Honourable Martin Tlapa, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, where they discussed possible areas of cooperation between both countries. Both parties made a commitment to commence negotiations on the signing of a Tax Information Exchange Agreement (TIEA) and a Double Taxation Agreement, which would be finalized through the respective Ministries of Finance. Additionally, the Czech officials expressed their delight at the possibility of a direct airline route between Antigua and Barbuda and the Czech Republic through a chartered airline.
Additional matters discussed were Antigua and Barbuda’s candidacy for a seat on the International Maritime Organization (IMO); tourism promotion between both countries; establishment of a trade mission between both countries and the provision of scholarships for Antiguans and Barbudans to study at Czech Universities.
During his visit, Ambassador Thomas paid courtesy calls on the Honourable Vladimir Bartl, Deputy Minister for Foreign Trade and European Union, Mr. Zdenek Kubanek, Deputy Director, Department of the Americas, and other senior officials within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.
